A tour of Sanday and its many beaches, including the lighthouse at Start Point and the engines of the German ship B-98 which grounded after the tow line parted when being towed away to be scrapped.

I immediately thought when I saw your reference to B98 that it would have been one of the German fleet scuttled in Scapa Flow and salvaged later on but actually it was a German destroyer built in 1915 and damaged by a mine in 1917 losing its bows. It was being towed to Scapa Flow by a British ship after the war to join the German Navy ships that were still floating with their crews on board. Fascinating!! I checked in my 1937 “Shipping Wonders of the World” magazines and there was no mention of B98 being salvaged by Cox and Danks..no wonder!!!

A beautiful landscape with a very eerie history. Thanks Harvey for your additional research xx
